With Tropical Storm Idalia back out to sea, residents of Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas sorted through debris of damaged homes as crews worked to restore power and clear downed trees. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis noted that Idalia — which made landfall Wednesday as a Category 3 hurricane — caused less damage than feared because it missed heavily populated areas. |

Former President Trump pleaded not guilty to 13 charges related to his alleged illegal attempts to overturn Georgia's 2020 presidential vote for Joe Biden. Trump made the pleas early so he could skip an arraignment hearing next week, when cameras would have recorded him pleading "not guilty" in person. Our brains are having trouble processing that Trump did something to avoid being on camera.

For the first time, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas reported receiving trips on a private plane owned by Harlan Crow, the Republican megadonor and real estate magnate. Crow's decades of gifts to Thomas — namely, luxury vacations almost every year for the justice and his wife — were revealed this spring by investigative outlet ProPublica, sparking a movement for court reform. |

A senior member of the extremist group was sentenced to 17 years in prison for helping organize the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol meant to stop Congress from certifying Joe Biden's election win. Joseph Biggs' sentence is the second-longest for a Jan. 6 organizer: Stewart Rhodes, the founder of the Oath Keepers militia, was sentenced to 18 years in May. Enrique Tarrio, the Proud Boys' leader, will learn his sentence next week. |

| A high-intensity cardio exercise that's easy on your joints and improves coordination might sound like it'll cost you $200 a month, not counting workout-branded tank tops and leggings. In fact, you only pay about $10, one time for equipment, because the workout is jump rope. |

Since March, Taylor Swift's Eras Tour has taken over each of the North American cities it's passed through. In October, it will be taking over theaters — so much so that AMC quintupled its website's visitor capacity to avoid a Ticketmaster-style debacle. Eras' international conquest begins in November. |
