1. NETANYAHU REJECTS CEASEFIRE |
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected calls for a ceasefire to help release Israeli hostages held by Hamas and allow safe delivery of food, water and medicine to Palestinians in Gaza. Instead, the military pushed its ground invasion farther into northern Gaza while its airstrikes hit near several hospitals. Israeli soldiers also freed their first captive since the ground operation began — a 19-year-old soldier captured by Hamas during its Oct. 7 attacks on southern Israel. Only a few of about 240 hostages taken in the attacks have been freed. |

Illinois landlord Joseph Czuba pleaded not guilty to murdering a 6-year-old boy and trying to murder his mother because of their Muslim faith. Czuba, 71, is charged with a hate crime in the Oct. 14 stabbings that killed Wadea Al-Fayoume and severely injured his mother, Hanaan Shahin. Czuba, their landlord, was allegedly upset about the Israel-Hamas war and attacked them when Shahin, a Palestinian American, urged him to "pray for peace." |

The United Auto Workers struck a tentative deal with General Motors, the last of the Detroit's Big Three automakers to sign on after six weeks of targeted strikes. The deal, which would raise pay 30% over the next five years, is similar to tentative agreements made with Ford and Stellantis last week. Union workers at all three companies will vote whether to approve the contracts over the next two weeks. |

4. LEAD IN KIDS' FRUIT PUREE |
WanaBana's apple cinnamon puree fruit pouch has been recalled for potentially dangerous levels of lead, according to the FDA, which urged adults to have children tested for lead poisoning if they've consumed the product. North Carolina health officials found "extremely high" concentrations of lead in multiple lots of the product after tests discovered high blood levels in four children. |

The FDA has warned people against buying or using eyedrops sold under the store brands for CVS, Rite Aid and Target — all of which have pulled the products from their shelves — or those sold by Velocity Health or Cardinal Health's Leader or Rugby brands. Agency inspectors ordered the recalls last week after finding unsanitary conditions and bacteria at the facility that makes the drops. |

It's been a tough year for pumpkin farmers in Western states, where extreme heat and drying-up water supplies have resulted in harvests of smaller pumpkins and fewer of them. Rising labor costs and inflation have also squeezed profits, leaving some farmers to keep some fields unplanted. It's the Not-So-Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. |
