Israel declared war on Hamas on Sunday in response to the group's surprise attacks the day before, the deadliest to hit Israel in decades. Already close to 1,200 Israelis and Palestinians have been killed, nearly all in southern Israel and the Gaza Strip, and more than 130 people from inside Israel have been taken hostage. At least four Americans were killed in the attack. |

2. AFGHANISTAN EARTHQUAKE |
At least 2,000 people are dead in Afghanistan after a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck Saturday morning near Herat, a city the size of Milwaukee. Hundreds are still trapped in the rubble as more than 1,300 homes were destroyed. China, Pakistan and several relief organizations are providing aid, but most countries have held back over concerns of working with the Taliban. |

Over the weekend, California Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed bills that would cap insulin prices at $35, ban caste discrimination, decriminalize hallucinogens and provide free condoms to high school students. Under bills he signed into law, companies with more than $1 billion in revenues will have to report greenhouse gas emissions and employers statewide must provide workers five paid sick days per year, up from three. Newsom said providing free condoms is too expensive. Who's going to tell him what babies and STDs cost? |

4. PRESCRIPTION FOR PATIENCE |
Prepare yourself for long lines at the pharmacy if you haven't been standing in them already. Pharmacies were already short on staff and on hundreds of medications but now they're heading into cold and flu season, their busiest time of year, with new Covid-19 and RSV vaccines in addition to new flu shots. We'd say to take a chill pill, but there's a shortage of those, too. |

Colorado has accused a funeral home owner of trying to hide his improper storage of at least 115 decaying bodies. Forensic analysts could take several months to learn the identity of the bodies as families wait to learn whether Jon Hallford, the owner of Return to Nature Funeral Home, had actually buried or cremated their loved ones. So far, Hallford has not been charged with a crime. |

| In college and professional football, coaches tell quarterbacks what play to run through a radio receiver in the QB's helmet, a technology that is not an option for players who are deaf or hard of hearing. So AT&T worked with the football program at Gallaudet University, the premier U.S. institution for deaf students, to build an in-helmet screen that shows a quarterback which play their coach has called. |

Just one in four senior dogs — those older than five or six — are adopted. That is a shame, because sharing your home with wiser, seasoned companion has a lot of benefits, as we learned from Josey Miller of Best Friends Animal Society and her adoptable friend, Christine the Chihuahua. |

Journalist Ed Kashi has had his photographs published in the most prestigious outlets including National Geographic, Time and The New York Times Magazine. But some of the photos he's most proud of aren't his — they're from teenagers who, in some cases, are taking their first-ever pictures. |

It's the closest to Graceland you'll get up north: A re-creation of the King's den is on tour, and you can soak in the beshagged Polynesian ambiance where he recorded some of his last songs. Love Me (Bar)Tender is coming soon to Boston and Chicago, and later this week in New York. |

If owned an Italian restaurant, in October I would change the menu to say "fettucine afraido" and "garlic dread" and "boocatini". I would go out of business, but it would be worth it. —@Doctor1Hundred
