A U.S. Navy warship in the Red Sea shot down three drones in self-defense, the military said, while Houthi rebels on Yemen's west coast struck three nearby merchant ships with ballistic missiles, inflicting minor damage. The Iranian-backed Houthis plan to continue attacking ships they claim are linked to Israel, while the U.S. decried the "direct threat to international commerce and maritime security." |

Since a week-long cease-fire expired on Friday, Israel has expanded its ground operation to all corners of the Gaza Strip, ordering evacuations in parts of the south before bombing them. Israel had ordered Palestinians to leave northern Gaza in mid-October, so many evacuees have nowhere to go except nearby areas which themselves may be targeted. "The reality is that no place is safe in Gaza," one mother of four said. "They kill people in the north. They kill people in the south." |

Flu, RSV and Covid-19 cases have all been rising, according to the CDC. The growth in flu cases is accelerating while RSV, the lung infection that's most dangerous to infants and elders, may be peaking. Covid is the deadliest, killing about 1,000 people in the U.S. each week. No joke here: Please get your Covid booster, flu shot and, if you're eligible, your RSV vaccine. |

A weekend of heavy snow, wind or both in Colorado canceled all three days of men's World Cup ski races this weekend. In the Pacific Northwest, up to a foot of snow blanketed the Cascade Mountains in western Oregon and Washington. High winds and heavy rains hit the Seattle and Portland metros, each of which saw power outages in the low thousands of households. |

6. PARENTING HACK (IF YOU'RE A PENGUIN) |
At least there's one species where parents of newborns get enough sleep. Researchers in the journal Science reported that Antarctic chinstrap penguins take thousands of miniscule naps a day, each lasting about four seconds. These "micro-sleeps" add up to about 11 hours of sleep daily, a pattern the penguin parents can keep going for several weeks. As a service to Need2Know readers, we've inserted a few seconds in the newsletter for you to enjoy a micro-sleep. If you please... [One, two, three, four.] OK, refreshed? Good, now read on for some more N2K news. |

Queen Bey rules again. Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé led the box office, earning $21 million in the concert feature's debut weekend. While Taylor Swift's Eras Tour opened at nearly $93 million, Renaissance was up against the traditional weekend-after-Thanksgiving lull in the action, where no movie had opened above $20 million in 20 years. |

9. HOW TO BUILD A GINGERBREAD HOUSE |
Bakers Adaeze Nwanonyiri and Lenny Rosenberg showed us the technique to ice and affix your gingerbread house panels so that the whole thing doesn't collapse. For those making their gingerbread from scratch, they advise a full day of resting the dough before baking. Good news, Millennials and Gen Z renters, there is a house you can afford. Bad news: It's made of spiced dough. More good news: It doubles as your food pantry. |
