If the Colorado Supreme Court has its way, former President Donald Trump won't be in the running for president in 2024, at least in the Centennial State. The 4-3 decision declaring Trump ineligible under the U.S. Constitution's insurrection clause in the 14th Amendment — as the result of his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol — will likely head for a showdown in the nation's highest court. |

The death of a 5-year-old boy in a Chicago migrant shelter has confirmed the fears of medical professionals who have warned that inadequate medical care and crowded shelters are a recipe for outbreaks of such illnesses. Four other children and two adults living in the shelter on Chicago's southwest side have been hospitalized. The cause of the 5-year-old's death has not been released. |

The Biden administration is moving to sharply limit logging in sections of national forest considered old growth, where mature trees provide crucial wildlife habitat and store lots of carbon. The proposal, which would take effect in 2025, would allow commercial logging in so-called mature forests. Old-growth forests are also threatened by wildfire, insects and disease. Heck, Joe Biden may have planted some of those trees himself.

New York will create a commission to study and potentially recommend reparations for the state's involvement in the slave trade. Gov. Kathy Hochul, who signed a bill authorizing the commission, said New York state, not just the South, "flourished" with the wealth generated by enslaving people. The commission's recommendations, which won't be binding, follow similar efforts in Illinois and California. |

Hackers breached the internal systems of Comcast's cable provider, which said in a legal filing that nearly 36 million people were affected. The mid-October breach exposed some customers' contact information, security questions, date of birth and the last four digits of their Social Security numbers. |

Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman Supreme Court justice, who died Dec. 1 at age 93, was laid to rest after a service including eulogies from President Joe Biden and Chief Justice John Roberts. Nominated by Ronald Reagan to the high court in 1981, she generally ruled as a conservative but twice helped uphold Roe v. Wade in abortion rulings. |

In the fourth holiday season since the Covid-19 pandemic brought more shopping online than ever, retailers are figuring out new ways to get packages to us faster than ever. Amazon has split the country into regions so goods don't have to travel from a warehouse across the country, and Walmart is automating warehouses and keeping larger regional inventories to avoid long-distance shipping. SELF-CHECKOUT BLUES: Meanwhile, you know what's not faster? All of us, scanning 42 things at the self-checkout while trying not to tip over the stack of things we'd moved across the finicky barcode platform. Some stores are finding it all more of a hassle than it's worth, shutting self-checkout down altogether, while Target is turning self-checkout into an express-style lane for people with 10 or fewer items. We wrote this summary while waiting in a CVS self-checkout line. We also did the Times crossword and scanned some receipts for taxes.

California regulators approved new rules that will let cities recycle wastewater into drinking water, a method known for decades as safe but which had been avoided over fears that grossed-out residents would rebel. But increasingly severe droughts and more strain on the water supply has changed the calculus. Colorado was the first state to allow what the head of the regulatory board called toilet-to-tap. |

We met the two-time Olympic medalist on the ice to talk about her new holiday musical revue and her new children's book, Stronger Than She Thinks. Nancy was great, and we're also pleased that we made it through the interview without falling down. |
| | 10. TATERS THE SPACE LASER CAT |
How fitting that the first video transmitted to space by laser is a cat who is himself chasing a laser? Meet Taters, the star of the successfully transmitted clip, which NASA hopes to keep testing so it can eventually replace the comparatively pokey radio transmission currently used by spacecraft far from Earth. |

None of you wished us a happy National Emo Day yesterday. Of course you didn't. No one understands. |
