The decades-long increase in drug overdose deaths, which spiked during the pandemic, may have begun to taper off in 2022, according to new estimates from the CDC. While nearly 110,000 people died from overdoses last year — most of them from fentanyl and other synthetic opioids — the 2% increase is a much smaller increase than the spikes of 30% in 2020 and 15% in 2021.
