Smoke from ongoing wildfires in Canada has again blown southward, this time obscuring skies and making it unhealthy to be outdoors across the western Great Lakes region, including the metro areas of Chicago, Milwaukee and Minneapolis-St. Paul. The smoke was expected to keep moving south overnight into Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky.

The Supreme Court ruled that state courts can stop legislatures from overstepping their authority to regulate federal elections. It might sound a little boring, but the decision will prevent legislators from appointing Electoral College members that overturn their state's popular vote for president, a plan that some Republican state lawmakers advocated after Joe Biden's election victory in Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin and other battleground states.
