The Supreme Court struck down affirmative action in college admissions. Considering race in admissions violates the Constitution's promise of equal protection under law, the court's six conservative justices ruled. The court's three dissenting liberals argued that equal protection in a racially unequal country means that acknowledging race is necessary. Preferred admission for kids of alumni: Still totally Constitutional 👌 TODAY: Among the decisions the court will release today, its final day of the current term, is its judgment on President Biden's student loan forgiveness plan, which would wipe out debt up to $20,000 for as many as 27 million students and former students. |

The NFL suspended three players indefinitely for betting on games last season. Players, coaches, and league and team officials are prohibited from gambling on league games but can place bets on other sports so long as they're not on the job. A fourth player was suspended for six games after betting on a different sport while he was at his team's facility. |

Adults 60 and older can get the newly approved vaccine for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) beginning this fall, said the CDC — but first they should ask their doctor if it's right for them. Some CDC advisers had pushed for a stronger recommendation for those 65 and older, because RSV can be dangerous for older adults as well as newborns. |

The officer accused of failing to stop the 2018 Parkland school massacre, which killed 17, was acquitted of felony child neglect. Former Broward County Deputy Scot Peterson was the first officer ever tried for their response during a school shooting. Security footage showed Peterson retreating from a hallway door that would have led him to the shooter, Nikolas Cruz, but Peterson said echoes from the gunfire made it impossible to find him. |

(Stay with us on this one — it's a bit long but explains why there might be more flight delays soon.) Starting tomorrow, wireless companies can start switching on 5G towers near airports. That's a problem for airlines, because one in five planes for U.S. flights haven't been updated to prevent 5G signals from interfering with the plane's altimeter, which pilots need for landings in bad weather. SO? That means starting Saturday, roughly 20% of planes for U.S. flights will be rerouted to land somewhere else if skies aren't clear over their destination. Ergo, more delays. Thanks for hanging in. Aren't you glad you know that frustrating news now? |

Until the Canadian wildfires stop burning, we can expect only temporary breaks from the smoke blowing our way. Unfortunately, those breaks are not free, and we'll be paying for them in sweat. |

An electrical fire in the basement of Tiffany & Co. on Fifth Avenue in New York caused two minor injuries during the evacuation but no further harm to people. The precious merchandise in the famed store upstairs — items like the $225,000 T1 diamond necklace or the $215,000 race car clock — were also unhurt. A singed Tiffany necklace might have brought the price a bit closer to our range. |

Just under two years after Richard Branson rode his Virgin Galactic rocket to the edge of space — beating rival billionaire Jeff Bezos by about a week — the company launched the first commercial space flight with paying passengers. Virgin Galactic has at least 800 passengers who over the last decade prepaid for a flight. Those ticket holders paid $200,000, but new ticket buyers will have to shell out $450,000. Why can't billionaires get really into, like, bullet trains between New York and D.C.? |

If What to Stream was a competition, Kim Cattrall would easily win it this week: We recommend watching her new Netflix sitcom Glamorous as well as the second season of And Just Like That..., which sees her (briefly) reprise Samantha. For a throwback, check out The PJs, Eddie Murphy's classic, edgy claymation sitcom. Our podcast pick this week is the anti-advice show from dry humor legend Tig Notaro. |
One thing we love: Turning long weekends into mini-vacations. One thing we hate: Smoky air is just a thing now, isn't it? One thing we ate: Breakfast burrito with Just Egg, avocado, hash browns and green salsa. Highly recommended. |
