President Joe Biden and congressional leaders meet today for debt ceiling negotiations. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy insists that Biden agree to cut spending and add work requirements that would drop millions of people from healthcare coverage, food stamps and cash assistance. Democrats refuse to tie cuts to raising the debt limit but could discuss spending levels for the 2024 budget that begins in October. "Let's talk about debt, baby / Let's talk about you and me" — McCarthy to Biden (OK, not really) |

Sisters in the second and fourth grades, as well as a 3-year-old and his parents, are among the eight people gunned down in a Dallas-area mall Saturday, CBS News reported. Details about the suspect, Mauricio Garcia, are emerging. He was kicked out of the Army three months after joining in 2008 for mental health issues, and the patch he was wearing when killed by a nearby officer read "RWDS," an acronym for the white supremacist phrase "Right Wing Death Squad." |

People have bet more than $220 billion in the five years since the Supreme Court opened the door for states to legalize sports betting, which two in three have done. Over the same period, calls to the 800-GAMBLER hotline have increased 15% and have more than tripled in New Jersey, which legalized sports betting shortly after winning the 2018 lawsuit at the high court. Companies like FanDuel and Draft Kings are encouraging users to expand their bets from game outcomes to rapid-fire "microbets" on individual pitches and plays. |

The 2020 Census may not have counted nearly one in five noncitizen residents and one in 20 citizens, according to the Census Bureau's comparison of its official head count with a new, unofficial estimate. Then-President Donald Trump was accused of trying to depress the number of noncitizens counted in 2020 so that their localities, which often vote Democratic, would lose congressional seats and federal funding. If the new estimate is correct, 8.3 million Hispanic and 2.8 million Black residents were left out of the official count. Taking the us out of census.

The trade group for large airlines said that weather causes more than half of cancellations, but the potential regulations would only apply to cancellations within the airlines' control. |

Most U.S. healthcare providers don't share records with each other, which means that if you or a loved one is rushed to a new hospital, it's a good idea to prepare an easy-to-access document that lists your basic health history, past hospitalizations and surgeries, and the medications and supplements you're taking to help new doctors and nurses more quickly get up to speed, says Dr. Deena Adimoolam-Gupta, an expert in primary care and endocrinology. |

When Danny Taing moved back to the U.S. after four years in Japan, he couldn't find many of the Japanese snacks he'd come to love. He also realized how little Americans knew about Japan. Seeing an opportunity to "help open people's minds a bit," he founded Bokksu, a subscription box company that showcases traditional snacks from around Japan, some from families who have been making them for more than 300 years. |
