The House will vote tomorrow on the debt ceiling budget compromise that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy made over the long weekend with President Joe Biden. The deal freezes spending in 2024 (while raising it for the military) and caps increases to 1% for 2025. Some House Democrats will have to vote for McCarthy's bill if enough conservative Republicans keep their word to oppose any compromise. |

Before the Biden administration allowed the pandemic emergency to expire on May 11, U.S. Customs and Border Protection had been rejecting asylum seekers at the Mexican border for more than three years on public health grounds. Now those seeking safety in the U.S. could be deported and banned from returning for five years if they try to enter the country without first scheduling an asylum appointment through CBP One, a glitchy app that offers so few slots that some users have been logging on for months without success. |

Uganda's president signed into law the Anti-Homosexuality Act, which includes the death penalty for a gay person who has sex with a minor or who passes HIV to someone through sex. Global health programs said the law would make it harder to provide treatment for HIV and President Biden said the U.S. will consider sanctioning those responsible for the "tragic violation" of human rights. |

Hurricane season begins Thursday, but many Florida residents whose homes were destroyed by Hurricane Ian last September are still trying to get their insurance payments and relief from federal and state programs. Cities are still clearing debris and, as of early March, more than 143,000 claims still need to be paid as a result of Ian, which killed 156 people. |

Yes, rising sea levels could flood the streets of Manhattan someday, but New York's hottest new existential threat has the island sinking into the water. A new study found that the city is sinking 1 to 2 millimeters each year under the weight of everything on top of it, including more than 8 million people, more than 1 million buildings and who knows how many double-parked cars. On a positive note: The city won't sink far enough to hit the waterline for hundreds of years, so something else will probably finish us off by then. Since our apartment is sinking into the ocean, can we please get some relief on our rent?

After two more horses died over the weekend at Churchill Downs, horse racing's oversight body scheduled today's emergency meeting with the Kentucky Derby racetrack to learn why 10 other horses also died there in the last month, including seven before the Triple Crown event. Churchill Downs' superintendent will review his own track and training facilities. So the people in charge of where the horses have been dying … are allowed to review themselves? |

Some Hawaiians are suing to block construction of a surfing wave pool in Oahu, which they say would harm seaweed, desecrate ancient Hawaiian remains and waste water. But the project's leader, Hawaiian surfer Brian Keaulana, said that competitive surfers can get as much practice from one hour in a wave pool as they do from a week of waiting for waves, so the pool would benefit surfers training for the 2024 Olympics. |

Nepal honored the historic first ascent of Mount Everest, made 70 years ago Monday by climber Tenzing Norgay — a member of the Sherpas, a community in the Himalayas — and Edmund Hillary, the New Zealander whom he guided. The government also honored Sherpa mountaineers Kami Rita, who summited Everest for a record 28th time this summer, and Sanu Sherpa, who has twice climbed the world's 14 highest peaks. |

With high expectations, Disney's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid did anything but flounder at the box office. Its opening weekend collected $95.5 million, the fifth-largest Memorial Day opening ever, as Ariel dethroned Fast X, which brought in $23 million in its second week. Those poor unfortunate souls who had to compete with a Disney blockbuster. |
