Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis is running for president, he announced in a Twitter livestream that technical issues delayed for nearly a half-hour. DeSantis trails former President Donald Trump by 38 percentage points in the most recent Morning Consult poll of potential Republican primary voters despite enacting a GOP wish list, including bans on nearly all abortions, on teaching about gender and sexuality, and on diversity programs in public colleges.

Many of Guam's 150,000 residents were left without power or utilities the day after its most powerful typhoon in two decades. How badly Typhoon Mawar damaged the Pacific island, a U.S. territory, is still unclear, but so far no deaths and only minor injuries have been reported. "What used to be a jungle looks like toothpicks," said a National Weather Service meteorologist of the scene outside their door.

Montana this week became the first state to ban all drag reading events at public schools and libraries, not just those which a critic alleges to have sexual content. Laws being challenged in Florida and Tennessee ban children from attending drag performances only if the shows have sexual content, although the distinction is nearly meaningless to the anti-LGBTQ activists who regard drag as inherently sexual.
