1. SURPRISE TRUMP CHARGES |
Former President Donald Trump was hit with new federal charges Thursday, but not the ones people were expecting. Instead of being indicted on charges of trying to overturn the 2020 election, which are still expected soon, Trump was charged with obstructing justice and willfully retaining classified documents in the case centering on the trove of papers at his Mar-a-Lago estate. The updated grand jury indictment alleges that Trump asked a staffer to delete camera footage to obstruct investigators. |

2. (OTHER) INDICTMENT WATCH |
We were surprised by the updated Florida indictment because Trump's lawyers had met with prosecutors in the separate federal case of his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. The meeting with special counsel Jack Smith's team signaled that an indictment would come soon in that case. |

The U.S. economy's surprising acceleration in the second quarter makes some analysts hopeful that the Federal Reserve's interest rate increases will keep slowing inflation without sending the economy into recession. Economists have speculated that rate hikes have spared enough industries that the overall economy is fine and that layoffs have affected mostly better-paid workers. |

The university says the materials are protected by attorney-client privilege. |

This weekend we recommend Steve Carrell in the unfamiliar terrain of psychodrama, a rewatch or first watch of Sharknado — which we're pleased to report is delightfully terrible 10 years on — and a drama going behind the scenes of one of the biggest fads in the last century (Beanie Babies!). And this week, we're partnering with The NewsWorthy. If you love Need2Know's news bites, this might be right up your alley, so check out today's episode! |
