House Republicans held their first hearing in an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. Oversight Committee Chair James Comer said they have "a mountain of evidence" to unveil in the probe, which is focused on linking the alleged misdeeds of Hunter Biden to his father. Some conservative legal experts say they have not seen evidence of an impeachable offense. Mountain, molehill, who can say? |

There's no sign that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has enough Republican votes to pass a temporary spending bill he will introduce today, let alone a Senate bill his members like even less. In other words, expect a government shutdown at 12:01 a.m. Sunday. So, good luck if you need to renew your passport, want to visit a national park, receive food aid or have children enrolled in Head Start. |

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law to raise the minimum wage for fast-food workers to $20. The new wage, one of the nation's highest, will give the average fast-food employee in California an hourly raise of $3.40. It takes effect in April and only applies to chains with at least 60 U.S. locations. Working full-time at that wage, an L.A. resident would spend 58% of their income on the median one-bedroom apartment. They don't call it minimum for nothing. |

Now that he's back in the U.S. after two months in North Korean custody, Army Pvt. Travis King is expected to undergo psychological tests and meet with his family. After that, he may face punishment for running into the authoritarian country on July 18 instead of boarding a flight to the U.S., where he was set to face military discipline for an assault conviction at a South Korean nightclub. |

The main U.S. research base in Antarctica announced it will stop serving alcohol at its two main bars starting Sunday, although workers will be able to bring their own alcohol from a weekly ration. McMurdo Station leaders said the change was to improve workers' lives overall, not to deter sexual assault, a widespread problem there: A 2022 report found 72% of women on the base had been sexually harassed or assaulted. |

An oversight board said government spy agencies should have to get a warrant before reading emails or listening to phone calls of a U.S. citizen that are collected as part of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. The Biden administration says requiring a warrant would make it harder to stop terrorist attacks and hacking of U.S. companies. |

Michael Gambon, the actor who played the beloved Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in six Harry Potter films, died of pneumonia at age 82. The Irish-born Gambon was a legend of British stage, screen and radio for decades before taking on his highest-profile role in the 2000s. |

Netflix will mail out its last-ever DVDs today to some of fewer than 1 million customers who still subscribe to the mail service that was the streaming platform's original business when the company launched in 1998. The DVD service had 20 million subscribers at its peak — fewer than one-tenth of its global subscriber base last year. Does this mean it's too late to return the DVD they mailed us in 2008? | |

As the sun sets sooner each day, more of us will start exercising indoors. Should you get a gym membership, or would it be easier and cheaper to work out at home with a fitness app? Celebrity personal trainer Kira Stokes helped us weigh the pros and cons of each. |

It's raining in New York (again), so we plan on staying inside, drinking tea and streaming the weekend away. Our picks this weekend cover the Mount Rushmore of runway models, the wealth and crime in New York City, misbehaving school principals and an HR manager solving a murder mystery. |
One thing we love: Jetlag making us fall asleep at a reasonable hour. One thing we hate: Understaffed pharmacies. One thing we ate: Grilled vegetables and olive oil on toasted bread. |
