1. Wall Street Retreats as Oil Prices Leap on Middle East Fears |
U.S. stock markets were down from their recent record highs yesterday on concerns over escalations in the Middle East. The S&P 500 fell by about 1% and the Nasdaq by a little more. Oil prices jumped over $70 a barrel after Iran launched a ballistic missile attack on Israel, drawing vows of retaliation. This is exactly the situation U.S. diplomacy has sought to avoid, and as a result, markets are braced for worsening news over the coming days.
Recent rate cuts by the federal reserve, which buoyed markets, remain shadowed by concerns over weakening manufacturing and rising unemployment. Also, a strike by dockworkers at 36 ports could disrupt supply chains and exacerbate inflationary pressures. 2. Former President Jimmy Carter Turns 100, Wins At Life |
Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, has celebrated his 100th birthday this week.
He's the first American president to reach a full century, potentially making up for the fact that he only served one term and then got beaten by Ronald Reagan.
More than four thousand Habitat for Humanity volunteers in Carter's hometown of Plains, Georgia built 30 homes in a week to commemorate Carter's long-standing commitment to the charity. 100 people were also sworn in as U.S. citizens at Carter's former high school.
Carter's life journey from a Depression-era farmer's son to the highest office in the United States and his subsequent work (including winning the Nobel Peace Prize) are almost as impressive as Donald Trump's life journey from a property developer's son to the same office, (albeit without the Nobel Peace Prize) and he's still got 22 years to go. 3. Monopoly Introduces Drinking Game Because Ha Ha Owning Property |
Given how likely most 21-year-olds are to ever own property, Monopoly has updated with a more constructive concept instead: Getting sh*t-faced. That's right. Hasbro has introduced "Monopoly Board Crawl," the first official drinking game version of the classic, aimed at players aged 21 and over.
The game involves no play money or worry about bankruptcy; instead, it focuses on drinking or sipping beverages while completing lighthearted challenges and dares to collect properties. Designed for 2 to 10 players, the game offers a 30-minute experience, substituting monetary transactions with sips of a drink to "buy" properties or pay "rent."
Challenges or dares can also allow players to steal properties from one another. The more you learn about this game the more it sounds like a great idea, no? It is now available exclusively on Amazon for $20, joining other classic games that have received a drinking game variation. Those include Drinking Twister, Drunk UNO, and Drunk Clue.
Hasbro absolutely insists that you don't need to drink alcohol to play the game although the strapline of the game is, literally, "it's a drinking game." So, you can imagine their lawyers are turning themselves inside out over this.
Monopoly is derived from The Landlord's Game, created in 1903 in the United States by feminist Lizzie Magie, to demonstrate that an economy rewarding individuals is better than one where monopolies hold all the wealth. 4. KIND Snacks CEO Will Join Shark Tank, But Will He Be Cruel Or...Kind? |
How many KIND Bars do you eat each week? I reckon I eat about five. They're always right there at the bodega next to all the unhealthy snacks. Sure, they're covered in dark chocolate, but there's some fruit in there or whatever. So, dig in!
KIND Snacks founder Daniel Lubetzky joined Cheddar to talk about his new role on ABC's Shark Tank, which returns this month for its 16th season. He'll be the first new shark ever.
"I think they did crack the code on entertaining and educating families at the same time," he said. "I watch it with my kids sometimes. It's just a very entertaining mode to create curiosity and to teach people about going into partnership. There's a lot of positive tension. It doesn't punch below the belt."

"So, I do always provide insights and feedback in a kind way, and I think that's what I do broadly, a little bit different and better than others, which is what I've done over decades. I've learned to never pull back any punches. I always say the truth; I'm always earnest, but I do it in a way that's constructive and that helps our entrepreneurs in our community."

5. 200 New Words Added to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, But Not One Cheese Pun |
Merriam-Webster has enriched its iconic dictionary by adding 200 new words and term definitions, providing insights into contemporary language use and cultural trends.
The list is fulsome from "beach read" to describe light, escapist fiction ideal for leisure reading; to "Burrata," a mozzarella ball containing curds and cream. Wait. Maybe that's a cheese pun in the making? (See above.)
My favorite, as I mentioned, is "IDGAF," which, as we all know, is a "defiant acronym for indifference." Although my colleague Sydney also says "iDgaf" to emphasize giving a fudge in a further iteration of the term. They've also added "snog," which is a British term for kissing that I've been using for 35 years.
"Nepo baby," "MAGA," "cash grab," and "late capitalism" also all make the cut. Now they're in the dictionary, they're real things. That's how dictionaries work. Next year: "Full-on War In The Middle East," perhaps? Read More |
